About

I began this blog as a personal diary after our son D was diagnosed with selective mutism (SM), a rare anxiety disorder, in January 2010. When our journey with SM began, our son was not talking anywhere–not at school, not at daycare, and not even at home with us. Slowly, through therapy and understanding and just growing up, our son now talks almost everywhere. Yet even as his SM has improved, other challenges related to having an anxious, sensitive child have emerged. So our journey continues. I blog about the highs and lows of learning about and dealing with this condition, parenting and loving my son and daughter K, and other aspects of our lives. I welcome comments and contact from other parents dealing with similar issues.

One more thing: We regularly refer to our son talking as “blooming.” It started out as a cryptic reference from Apollo 13, but it’s become so fitting as our son has blossomed and grown.
